Sissygirl -EE

The eighth and final installment of my “Edmonds Entries” series. A poem for the girl I have tried to forget.

In my famous blue dress, worn on my 3rd birthday, in the house on the river.

She’s knocking on the door

asking me to play

A single light is lit

in the kitchen by the sink.

Dirty dishes stacked

to block the drain dead.

The rest of the house

hidden

by the night.

I’m wrapped up by the bath

No water to keep me warm

Knock

Knock

Knock

It creeps behind my head.

Little girl, must you insist

when the moon and I are one?

Can’t you come again

when the day knows your name?

A rustle of the handle is enough to make me

break

Just what is it you beg,

through these forests deep?

Creek it sleepy open,

by exhaustion alone

There she leaps her heart to mine

Simply asking

to be held.

And here I’ll stay forever,

or until she decides so

Standing in the doorway

simply asking

to be held.
